2020 AD is a horrible year. There is no trial period where we can uninstall this year nor we can undo the reality.
What we can do now is to survive, thrive and avoid being infected by the virus as possible and to mitigate the damage in the economy.
Working from home became one of the few “new normal” systems being implemented in most companies.
Working from home have pros and cons as well as it needs a lot of adjustments.
PROS
1. No need to travel to and from home to office.
You can save time and money from the comfort of your home.
2. More Time With Family
You will have a flexible working hours and will have more time with your family. You will have work and life balance if you use your time wisely.
3. You have freedom and healthier lifestyle
You can cook from home and can prepare healthier food. You can have a regular workout as well if you have gym equipment in your home.
4. Tax less income.
Work from home and outsourcing jobs can be tax free (depends on your location).
CONS (and solutions)
1. Many Distractions
If you are a family man and you have many kids back home, it is a normal thing to be distracted. Your kids will be there to distract you while working. One might ask you something, the other just wants your attention, and the younger one might cry asking for milk.
One solution will be having a separate home office dedicated for a WFH activity. If you have a spare room or space that you can convert into a home office, then it will be worth the investment.
Your home office will be your investment, so thorough planning is a must. You need to mitigate the distraction of family life, while not really detached from them. If you do not have a nanny or if your wife has side hustle as well, you will not have a choice but to involve in child raising. You should train yourself how to switch back in forth from your home office to your home needs.
If you have enough money to invest in a #home #office, you can hire an Architect to the the job for you.
For a start, keep your costs low by spending only what you need to perform your job.
2. No Human Interaction
If you a spouse and are having kids back home, you will have a lot of human interactions. They are your stress-reliever and your additional stress at the same time.
If you live alone, then that will be a lonely thing. If you are not ready to live like a hermit, I suggest that you find a co-working office space near you, so that you can easily cope up the loneliness.
3. Risk of over-working.
If find ourselves loving our works, we might be working a lot during the day and find ourselves burned out and stressed. You need to define your time schedule and allocate time for each task.
A designated home office will be of great help!
4. Risk of procrastination.
This is another risk of working from home: the lack of Productivity. If you are working in your bedroom, the bed is a constant temptation of resting, and you find yourself resting a lot in a day! The good side of working from home is the freedom of power napping! If you cannot help yourself sleeping, do the power nap instead but do not procrastinate. You need to put a schedule to finish your task.
Is Working From Home The Right Thing For You?
"As you can see, there are plenty of pros and cons of working from home. It is up to you to decide which ones are more important to you and have a bigger impact on your well being and happiness. If you want to go for remote work, you should have most or better all of the following characteristics:
You need to have A LOT of self-discipline.
You need to be able to stay focused and not get distracted easily.
You need to be great with time management.
You need to be organized and structured.
You need to be able to work on your own without constant supervision.
You need to be okay with working alone and spending most of your day alone (or go to co-working spaces)
Another thought on it: The good thing with remote work is, you can easily start it part-time. Give it a try and work a bit during the weekends or after your normal work to see if it is something that you could do full-time. There is nothing to lose, only experience to gain.
If you decided that working from home is for you, you need to focus your energy in building your enterprise from the comfort of your home.
STARTING IT FIRST!
Establishing your work from home enterprise can be difficult in the start as you need to work it out from yourself first, until you can be able to create the method and the system.
FIND A PARTNER!
If you do not have a partner to support you, find one. A lot of successful CEOs find partners to start their enterprise.
Your spouse can be your partner.
FIND A MISSION!
You need to define the WFH enterprise mission. It is not only to put food on the table but to aim more than that survival mission.
As Jeff Bezos said; “You have got to have some passion for the arena that you are going to develop and work in, because otherwise you’ll be competing against those who do have passion for that, and they’re going to build better products and services,” Bezos said at Amazon’s re:Mars conference in Las Vegas on June 6.
He added that it’s essential for an entrepreneur to “be a missionary,” you “can’t be mercenary,” meaning that you have to mission-motivated, not money-motivated.
“Missionaries build better products and services — they always win,” said Bezos. “Mercenaries are just trying to make money, and paradoxically the missionaries always end up making more money.”
